Californians have long been monish about the " Big One . " There was even amovie star the Rockall about it that might have been base in science . But probably not . Today , however , scientist voiced particularly terrific words on the topic of that " big " quake coming to California . Brace yourself .
grant to theLA Times , the director of the Southern California Earthquake Center Thomas Jordan touch to the Southern California portion of the San Andreas fault as " locked , loaded , and ready to undulate " in a late statement , meaning a A-one earthquake is expected imminently . The San Andreas fault , which stretches 800 miles through California and arrive within 35 miles of the major city of Los Angeles , has apparently been " wound very , very tight , " as it has not exempt stress for over a 100 year . If you had n’t relieved stress in 100 years , you ’d be " wound very , very tight " too .
Jordan monish that cities should prepare themselves for an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 8 , which is a somewhat softheaded earthquake . An earthquake that sizing could make shaking for close to two minutes , and even though the fault does n’t run directly through Los Angeles , the region would still be affected . For linear perspective , the 1989 Loma Prieto earthquake was only a 6.9 magnitude .

Just check out this really scary simulation that show the impact zone of a potential magnitude 8 earthquake along the San Andreas flaw line :
Yeah , that ’s no jocularity . TheLA Timeswent on to explicate that in 2008 the U.S. Geological Survey say that a 7.8 order of magnitude earthquake could get 1,800 death , 50,000 injuries , $ 200 billion in damage , and put the sewer scheme out of military commission for up to six month . Though since then , Los Angeles has beenupping its earthquake prep gameto ensure it ’s ready for the " Big One . "
OK , now go check San Andreas to leave about all this . And then , like , actuallyprepare .
