We ’re ruin down Season 3 ofBlack Mirror , now streaming on Netflix – be certain to check out our recaps and analysis of " Nosedive , " " Shut Up and terpsichore , " " piece Against Fire , " and " Hated in the Nation . " Here , we present our consultation with serial creator Charlie Brooker .
Thehacking attackthat debilitate major American websites on Friday occurred the same day that Netflix – one of the disrupted sites – let go the third time of year ofBlack Mirror . co-occurrence ? Fans of the glowering anthology series , which examine the potential horror loaf in our increasing trust on technology , probably did n’t handle either way , as long as the hack did n’t prevent them from binge - watching the six new episodesimmediately .
In a earpiece interview in the beginning this calendar month , series creator Charlie Brooker talked to Thrillist about what Americanizing the show after two seasons on British tv was like , why this lot of stories is n’t quite as bleak as previous single , and where to spot freshBlack MirrorEaster egg .

Were there any unexpected challenges in write the series for Netflix , rather than British television?Charlie Brooker : It ’s interesting . I was thinking a bit about how this is a spheric hearing now and that we have a slightly larger canvas . But when you ’re in the midst of write it , you ’re just thinking , Oh my god , I hope this is n’t shit . You’re fighting a fervour in that respect . You ’ve catch carry time that are malleable and you do n’t have commercial rupture . And sometimes , in reality , when I was writing scripts that I knew were go out on commercial-grade television system , I would work out where the breaks were as I was writing , and I would psychologically practice that . You do n’t have that any longer .
Netflix was very hands - off but very engaged , if that makes good sense . They have a muckle of thoughts and notation , but they never push you to take them , and they ’re always very well - consider . Sometimes they ’d point out that I ’d used a Britishism – like in a story where the cast is American and I used a word like " fortnight , " to American ears that might sound like something fromGame of Thrones .
Unlike the first two seasons , these episode all hit Netflix on the same solar day . Did you sequence them in a particular viewing order?Brooker : We went back and forth over the gild so many times – it started to get a bit like that puzzle where you ’re attempt to take a box and a chicken across a river , and you ’ve only develop quad on the gravy holder for one . There are certain floor you do n’t want back to back , and so we went ' round the business firm working it out . [ This time of year embark on ] jolly approachable , and then there ’s a trouble curve ball .
What were some specific informant of inspiration for this batch of episodes?Brooker : There ’s a tangible mixture here . " hat in the Carry Amelia Moore Nation " total about through two things : 1 ) it was believe , Well , there ’s a fortune of rage on social medium , is there a story there? And 2 ) quite often I ’ll seat down to guess , What ’s aBlack Mirrordetective story ? What ’s a genre we have n’t tackled yet?So it was those two thoughts that came together . I do n’t tend to look at the news and go , Well , I ’ve got to do something about the rise of Donald Trump , say , orSamsung just launched their new fridge - freezer that can function and take the children to school . It ’s weird , the ideas just sometimes pop up really quickly , like fully spring story – or they ’re really tricky ones .
" San Junipero " is a dearest story set in a beachy California town , and it ’s more hopeful than mostBlack Mirrorepisodes . How ’d that come about?Brooker : That ’s partially to keep thing fresh for me , egotistically . That was in reality the first story I wrote this season . I was doing two things : 1 ) I ’d read somebody going , " Oh , right , soBlack Mirrorhas gone to Netflix ; it ’ll get really American now " – so I thought , Well , OK , I ’ll lie with with you . California! And 2 ) I also sort of thought I ’m gon na do the reverse of what I ’d expect to see inBlack Mirror . It ’s one thing when you ’re doing three [ episodes ] . When you ’re doing six , you desire more [ variety ] . And the more we do , if we were just depressing all the time , it becomes too predictable .
The episode reminded me a lot of HBO’sWestworld – Brooker:– Which I have n’t seen ! I deliberately have n’t ensure it . I see [ the original 1973 moving picture ] when I was a child , but I have n’t see it in old age . I advisedly avoided observe the show . Whenever anything is in the same ballpark as us , I tend to judge and nullify it as much as I can , just because I ’ll come out think , Oh , shit , there ’s a whole area of things we ca n’t do . To what extent it ’s in the same ballpark as our show , I do n’t recognise . There are certainlyGrand Theft Autoundertones , as I understand it . But I guess ours is probably more affirmative ?

The tech in " San Junipero " is scary , though . Is it a unspoilt idea to have a manmade heaven on earth?Brooker : It ’s probably come . The characters in there do present the somewhat different point of view on their worldly concern . Those are the sorts of things we ’re going to be dealing with in the near future . I ’m delighted even our most affirmative story has terrorize you on some level . The show does n’t really ever have a content because I do n’t have answer to anything . So we might puzzle questions once in a while , but I do n’t sit down thinking this is gon na arrange the disk straight person .
WhichBlack Mirrorscenario most worry you?Brooker : I guess the " Waldo Moment " [ an episode about a crude cartoon bear who becomes a political sensation ] has really turned out to be the one that ’s most disturbing . I am quite neurotic and I kind of trouble about everything . I am actually quite pro - technology , and I attempt to be affirmative in real life about where that ’s all going . I ’m hoping it ’s stuff that we ’re all go to get good at dealing with and using , because it ’s not going off .
Overall , the " Waldo Moment " is believably one of the most terrific one . " Men Against Fire " is in many shipway , too . A lot of the others are n’t sample to circularise a message , they ’re strain to entertain , and then if there ’s an extra resonance , great . I loveThe Twilight Zone , I really like the " To attend Man " episode ofThe Twilight Zone , which is n’t really about anything , it ’s more a brainy puncher line . I ’m a devotee of that kind of carpet - pull , gotcha , almost - bordering - on - corny story as well . Black Mirror ’s not mean as a word of advice , although it ’s always pleasing if citizenry come aside devastated .
" Shut Up and Dance , " the account of the male child who falls victim to laptop - webcam hackers , feel the most annihilative to me , because that could pass today . Brooker : Oh , totally ! Yeah , no , that was very deliberate . We thought , countenance ’s do one that we think is not in any way science - fiction . Like , we ’ll just do one that could literally fall out decently now . It ’s completely contemporary , there ’s nothing insufferable that befall in there . Nothing magical . Nothing farfetched . Even the means [ the booster ] is communicate is all text message . We deliberately kept that very , very , very grounded , partly because I was aware there are other stories we ’ve got where we are in a fantastical time to come with magical technology doing thing . In the same agency that one of the thing that led to doing " San Junipero " was me thinking , Can I do a story coif in the past?– that was where that theme kind of sprang from – we thought , Can we do a report just set today ?
And we ’ve done that before , because " National Anthem " could have been set today . I intend , it ’s a preposterous sort of fable , but itcouldhappen . It sort of did happen ! And the " Waldo Moment " as well . But I think that ’s probably why you ’re finding " Shut Up and Dance " in particular depressing – because it absolutely could occur , and it ’s fair unforgiving .
I ’ve notice that some of my co - doer have put tape over their computer webcams . I ’m thinking of doing that now . Brooker : Isn’t it weird ? I do not understand why product with webcams built into them do n’t come , by nonpayment , with a slipper that cover that . It ’s not like it would be difficult . So why do n’t they ? [ Laughs . ] Someone ’s gon na do that , and that will trade a batch . If the next MacBook had that on , you ’d go , Oh , thank shag for that!I guess the matter is it ’s hard to introduce that now without admitting there ’s a job , or it would just vex a hatful of multitude , would n’t it ? They ’d go , What ? You ’re say I need that ?
I ’ve seen a few Easter eggs scattered throughout the new episodes , like fictional character - name callbacks andmore Irma Thomas covers . Did thefan theories of a connectedBlack Mirroruniverseencourage you to do more of that?Brooker : I’ve understand a couple things where hoi polloi have endeavor to work out whether this whole affair is arrange in one coherent existence , and my view is , if they need to consider that , that ’s fine . But I do n’t approach it that way , any more thanThe Twilight Zonewas prepare in one logical universe of discourse . It ’s probably all in the same psychological population .
Which other inside references should fan look out for?Brooker : In " Nosedive , " we confound in a twosome position updates from Michael Callow , the former choice minister – but I do n’t know if they ’re visible in the last cut . The " White Bear " insignia pops up in an installment . The Irma Thomas song comes back . Our news meshing , UKN , pop up a couple times . If you look at the concealment of the magazine in " Playtest , " there ’s unremarkably little Easter eggs hidden around . And a while ago , when we were doing the show , somebody sent me a radio link toa funny clause that Mallory Ortberg had writtenthat was taking the piss out ofBlack Mirrorin an laughable way , and so we ’ve hidden the phrase " what if earphone , but too much " in there as well , if you await closely . We did it before with the Christmas special – we had the Irma Thomas song come back in because it does sort of draw shut the whole matter together in some kind of artistic universe , to vocalize wanky for a minute . So it is deliberate , but it ’s not part of some wonderful unveiling that this is all put in the year 2030 or something .
