" Everybody in the world has an idea of what Los Angeles is , even if they ’ve never been here , " Jonathan Gold enjoin towards the beginning ofCity Of Gold , the docudrama ( stay with us ! gravely ! It ’s great ! ! ) being released this weekend about the laudedLA Timesfood author , whose own international call to fame come in with a Pulitzer Prize winnings in 2007 . And it ’s truthful : call for anyone around the world their thoughts about LA , and no one will reply that they know nothing about our city – rather , they ’ll twaddle on about Kim Kardashian , or Melrose , or Rodeo Drive , or sunshine , or all of the above .
And that ’s okay : LA is for certain defined in a way by our celebrities and weather and posh shopping , But true Angelenos – those that have a go at it this city for the nooks and crannies as much as the fancy - schmancy stuff , people who have come here from all over the world to find a better biography , whether that means pick up themselves on screen or opening a diminutive strip show - mall Thai restaurant focused on spicy southerly specialties – know that the heart of the metropolis ’s not key Kardashian at all . City of Gold basically confirms what we all already know : the heart of the city lies in the one beating inside Jonathan Gold .
For a city so focused on outward appearing , Gold ’s always been an unlikely spokesman .

For a metropolis so focused on outbound appearance , Gold ’s always been an unlikely spokesman : his constant suspenders are far from fashionable , his food - critic trunk sizing not exactly primed for skinny jeans , his David Crosby mustache miss any sorting of ironic pretension . But Gold ’s acumen for finding the metropolis ’s best nutrient , no matter of its location , toll , or ethnicity , is literally 2d to none : he ’s not just the first food critic to win a Pulitzer , he ’s the only one , and the movie is full of his peers and stirring gushing over his Word . Even if you ’re not a Gold acolyte , though , you ’ll need to seeCity of Gold : it ’s as much about Jonathan as it is about the city he loves .
Filmmaker Laura Gabbert prove us the metropolis in intimate ways – from command overhead , or through the windowpane of cars , mostly – but each shot feels like it ’s in passion with its localization , whether it ’s a quadcopter shot whooshing over Fairfax or a windowpane shot of Gold describing each speciality along a road in the San Gabriel Valley .
Unlike just about every movie about our city , this movie does n’t want to paint LA as glamorous or even navigable : each mathematical function it shows gives a rightful sense of the massiveness of the city ’s scope , certify Gold ’s geographical width , and yours , too . And the food the movie feature is nutrient you ’ll want to eat , ASAP , and feel very lucky that it ’s available in your hometown : the toothpick lamb at Chengdu Taste , the seafood wetback at Mariscos Jalisco , the injera at Meals by Genet , all within a little movement from wherever you are , right now , with their God Almighty often featured on screen report their own version of the American dream – and their hard - press method of reach it . Never does the movie become about Gold ’s encroachment on their business concern , but rather how their surd body of work give off . It ’s the immigrant experience seen through intellectual nourishment – and through Los Angeles itself .

Is it sort of look - goody ? Damn flat . It makes you feel ripe about not just its verbatim subject , but its assumed one , as well . And next time someone ’s hating on LA , just make them determine it … sooner , on an empty stomach .
