The workmanship beer industriousness is not thebig happy family it used to be . It ’s more like the Boltons – it ’s got serious job . But unlike America ’s favorite murderous kinsperson , most of craft beer ’s fighting takes property out of the public eye . But it ’s happening , as now there are over 4,000 brewery competing to quench your thirst .

For an inner flavour at the industry – wart and all – we speak to a craftiness beer insider ; someone who ’s play in the diligence for six year and currently works in merchandising for a well - known brewery . She spilled the pellets on everything from payoff to sexism to the secret of brewing . In an effort to keep her anonymous , we distorted some describe factor . You bed , so she can keep her line .

The craft beer bubble is in danger of bursting

" We thought 2015 was a rough year , but we ’ve babble to a long ton of brewery – bigger and smaller – who say it ’s roughright now . Breweries like Sierra Nevada and New Belgium . Sales are at best dead . We were in a boom , and that ’s why hoi polloi were trying to open breweries . Now you have a huge bubble that ’s close to bursting – from the top and the bottom . You ’re going to havebig guys get more aggressive , to put it nicely . "

Friends are becoming rivals

" There are breweries much with child than us that do n’t have as much growth as we do . As wonderful as it is to go to festival and see other brewery , there ’s that feeling of , ' Oh God , we ’re not a big , happy , loving family any longer . We ’re competitors . ' At some point it ’s get down to us or them . That ’s the stinking reality of it . "

Haste makes waste… and skunky beer

" Some breweries software system on a little scale leaf , and their beers will havediacetyland off - flavour because they do mobile canning – they have n’t seat in base and character assurance . They do n’t have labs to test to make certain that if there ’s an transmission , they can track it . They just want to get it out there , and the result is that there ’s a lot of shit on shelves . It does n’t do the slyness industry a favor to have someone try a certain style and say , ' Ugh , I do n’t like that at all . ' They might never pledge that vogue again because a individual beer was infected . "

Brewers themselves seldom reap the profits

" Brewers are some of the lowest - paid workers in craft beer . That ’s the repellant truth . It ’s not fair , but brewery can get out with it . I opine there are sure personalities drive to brewing . They ’re passionate . It ’s an art and a scientific discipline – there ’s a technical face to it . I consider sure personality are OK with that life-style and the earnings that comes along with it . "

Most people working in the industry aren’t getting paid, either

" mass on my team have remuneration in the low $ 30,000 kitchen stove , and that kills me because they ’re gifted and work firmly . You could n’t just hire a bum off the street to do their job , and they make more than our brewer . That ’s how bad it is . It ’s not just us .

" The craft beer manufacture notoriously pays shit . It still astound me when I get word what some people get paid . That ’s because our perimeter are so mingy . Then you appear at spirits – their margin are insane . At a dive bar , a whisky & soda is $ 6-$7 . Think of how much profit that one feeding bottle pays the still . Your field glass is halfway satisfy with soda water ! The margins are unbelievable for the bar , the distributor , and the still . "

Working in craft beer isn’t a cakewalk

" I love my job and the diligence . But it ’s not as glamorous as people think . When people ask me to hook them up with a job , I think , ' You would n’t cut it . ' You have to be passionate and put up with a luck of bullshit , and the industry ’s competitive right now . As much as there ’s this warm , fuzzy craft beer affair where everyone ’s confirm one another , everyone ’s also struggling for the viability of their business concern . I do n’t think it ’s long before you see more brewery fail than open .

" There are a mass of citizenry begging for jobs as brewers – when I work at my last brewery , if someone want to brew , they were told , ' derive in and brew for free a distich of times , and sweep the floors . ' Just to rise that you were unforced to do anything . Then youmightbe considered . "

It’s tough to stay an independent brewerin the era of consolidation

" It ’s not like we have n’t been approached , but we ’re not sell . Our distributors are starting to get bought up . When macrobrewers have restraint of the electrical distributor , then suddenly they ’re incentivizing bars and computer memory to buy stain other than ours . It ’s so bed up what ’s happening on the back end . The average consumer has no idea . "

Brewing is still a man’s world… but things are changing

" At my honest-to-god brewery , I felt undervalued . The head beer maker did n’t observe me – at first he need to flirt with me . The sales reps ' assumptions were , ' You ’re not a rough - looking dude who ’s been in this for 10 years . Where ’s your beard ? You bang nothing . ' I ’m gallant of myself , because I earned respect by the meter I left .

" I was asked , ' How do I know you ’re not blend to have your period and not show up ? ' It ’s insane that that was allow to be order in the workplace . I ’ve decidedly cried . I ’ve come home and call my dad when I was trying to fight through the sexism . I ’d say , ' I ’m better than this . I deserve well than this . '

" It ’s good where I am now – there are muckle of distaff employees . The percentage of charwoman in the industry is grow , and we support each other . There are organizations for women in wiliness beer , but I do n’t want to be overly focused on the fact that I ’m a char turn in beer . I ’m a mortal in beer who does a good job . But it ’s courteous to know there are other women out there show everyone there ’s a place for us in the industry . "

Breweries don’t worry about beer snobs

" Craft beer nerds are n’t patriotic to a specific brewery . While we want the the great unwashed who like about beer to love our poppycock , we ’d never go out of our way to cater to the crazy desires of extreme beer nerds ; they ’re not the modal beer consumer . betting odds are , no matter what we do , if they ’re not prime to think that theyhaveto love our beer mighty now , then they ’re still going to not be 100 % satisfied with it . We ’re more about find the rest of doing what the brewer and brand reps want , and make beers masses want to seat in the taproom and drink . That ’s not always the $ 500 10 - year gun barrel - senior bottle . "
