Hours before the fifth episode ofAmerican Horror Story : Roanokehit FX , Jehovah Ryan Murphy clear up a pressing head . " Evan Peters makes his time of year debut in tonight’sAmerican Horror Story , " he pen onTwitter . " And no , he ’s not playing a producer . "
This was a Apocalypse forAHSfans , who have spent most of the 6th seasonwondering where Peters was lurking . Was the serial veteran one of the desktop colonialists ? Was he yet to be introduced , aMy Roanoke Storycrew member , as Murphy so speedily shut down ? Or was he something great , the spawn ofLady Gaga ’s fiendish hag ?

The response : something altogether unlike . Peters finally arrived to the show in " Chapter Five " – and in a most flamboyant , petulant , and curious manner . The intro to the episode introduce us to Edward Philippe Mott , an ascendent ofAmerican Horror Story : Freak Show ’s Gloria Mott , the heiress played by Frances Conroy , and her Word Dandy , the nonparallel orca in preparation .
The character ’s backstory is operatic in the Murphy manner : a member of the post - Revolution upper incrustation , Mott fled Philadelphia to Roanoke in hunting of sexual freedom . By 24-hour interval , he commanded his subsidiary to build him a firm ( thehouse , in the context of use ofAHS : Roanoke ) so he could occupy it with art . By nighttime , he made honey to his grim manservant . Well , also by twenty-four hour period , too . In the backwoods , Mott was going to do whatever the hell he require , whenever the Scheol he want . Needless to say , the Evan Peters fanbase was n’t expecting any of it , but they have sex it .
Mott ’s temper was his downfall . One 24-hour interval , the bigwig determine his gallery of portraits ruined . or else of snuffing out one perpetrator , Mott accuses all of his maids , and locks them in the theme cellar – whereGaga ’s witch was last seen . Anything to keep his North Carolina sanctuary pure . Was the defile art crime the act of a mortal , or an incensed feeling looking to draw Mott out ? Whatever the eccentric , there ’s a connection between Gaga ’s witch and Mott that has yet to be search . All of the girls he mesh up expire in that root wine cellar , their bones later discovered decompose and rotten . Unintentional sacrifices to a lingering deity ?

Ultimately , Mott ’s covert living plans did n’t work out ; as we learned in " Chapter Five , " the Butcher search fresh line of descent to spill each Harvest Moon . Mott was in her crosshairs in that particular twelvemonth . According to Doris Kearns Goodwin – actual historiographer ! – The Butcher and her spirit minion staked Mott through the heart in the year of our lord , 1792 . To complement Mott ’s life , his last was … spendthrift , to say the least . Egad , this installment was blooming .
Even after the reveal , Peters ' purpose stay a mystery . later on in the episode , we see Peter resurface as the ghost of Mott in theMy Roanoke Nightmarereenactment as Matt and Shelby flee the house to escape The Butcher and her minions . retrieve theBeetlejuice - like friendly ghost second inAmerican Horror Story : Murder House , Mott appear to unwrap the true nature of the way , and open a private passage through which the couple and Flora , Lee ’s daughter , could bunk .
Still in wig and 18th - 100 duds , Peters ' scenes were in particular silly , even byAHSstandards – so softheaded , in fact , that you almost forget that a J - revulsion ghost pop out of nowhere to dash the bullshit out of us . The pernicious " sunken eye " that flashes across Ghost Edward ’s torch - light fount throughout his reintroduction may be one of the scariest effects in the show ’s history :

Mott leads Matt and Shelby through a passage into the woodwind , a move that only place them at once in the hands of – surprisal ! – the hillbillies . Did Mott deliver them there by choice ? We determine in " Chapter Five " that the hillbillies have made a pact with the Butcher and Roanoke colonists to wrangle fresh sum for forfeit during the Blood Moon . Could Mott also be in service ? Or worse ( undecomposed ? ) , Gaga ’s druid / devil / pissed - off lady ? Possibly !
This is to say , the otherEvan Peters theoriescould still be truthful . " Chapter Five " ends theMy Roanoke Nightmaretale by having Matt and Shelby escape , with Mott ’s trace simply an encounter in the rearview mirror . But that ca n’t be it for the high - profile plaster cast member , even if theX - Menneed him for eight more daily round of Quicksilver legal action . Peters is anAHSstaple and he appeared , presumptively , as an actor doing a dramatic reenactment of Mott ’s lifetime in a documentary - within - the - show depiction of the crazy taradiddle order by the existent Matt and Shelby ( André Holland and Lily Rabe ) . So Peterscouldturn up again , only as the doer who played Mott .
And if the documentary format continues –which seems unlikely , as the format seems to be shifting to a found - footage serial publication about the making ofMy Roanoke Nightmare– hecouldbe put on that dandy wig again , or something else entirely . Hecouldbe anyone – the beauty of subsist on the spirit airplane . But he might not be the shoat man , as the shoat man appears alongside him in certain moments . Which promote the question : who is the piglet man ? We thought the Peters unveil would bestow us puff . We were incorrect . Oink !
" Chapter Five " was a trueAmerican Horror Storyepisode – many solution , many more questions . Luckily , we have next hebdomad ’s promo :
There ’s no Evan Peters , but the one - injection preview give us a look at Cheyenne Jackson , in the end expose to be one of theMy Roanoke Storyproducers . His grapheme seems to be in ambush mode , like a ghostbusting version ofTo enamor a Predator . He reckon a long way from Mott ’s manor in North Carolina .
But maybe not for long . Current whispers intimate Jackson and his gang could head on over to the original Roanoke sign of the zodiac site , with reenactor in tow . Will they number side to face with real Matt and Shelby ? Or worse , a disgruntled Edward Mott ? And would the specter of Mott then have to be played by a different actor than Peters ? We ’ll learn a little more next week . And knowingAHS , that ’s emphasis on trivial .
