The BMWIsettawas the rolling avatar of full oddball eccentricity . Despite its expiry over half a one C ago , it lives on as a spectacle at BMW - oriented car shows and in the chronological record of self-propelled history as one of the most weirdly endear vehicle ever to hit the road .
I ’m saying it now : BMW , you need to revive the Isetta . It would be coolheaded as hell if it made a replication , sure , but more importantly , it actually makessense . A innovative twisting on this loveable little misfit and you have the potential to altogether beat Tesla at the electrical - vehicle biz . out of the question , you say ? get a line me out .
The Isetta is one of the first generation of economy cars
fine , true , the Isetta was n’t on the button an engineering wonder . It was a quirky - as - hell Italian motorcar until BMW bought the right and shove amotorcycleengine in back . Designed with the frugal urbanite in judgement , its raison d’etre laid in the hope of economy . It delivered , topping 75mpg over 60 years ago , and it even made for one heck of a unusual race elevator car .
People dig an efficient car with panache
It ’s no fluke that over 400,000 masses put repository down on a Tesla Model 3 despite there being nothing really revolutionary about its engineering . Rather , they ’ve buy into the idea ofan effective auto that does n’t break every mirror it come about .
The Isetta differentiates itself from most other railroad car saddle with the " thriftiness " tag end because itdoesn’tsuffer from an economy of personality . I mean , bet at it ! It could have been forgiven – and blank out – were it just a flavorlessthingfrom the present moment you opened the door . But instead , that door is on the front of the motorcar , opening a gateway to a world where financial and bionomical province does n’t have to be ugly or wearisome .
BMW make MINI , so itgetsquirky . Rival Mercedes - Benz ’s corporate sibling , Smart , has been making life-time - sized Micro Machines for years . The Isetta build sense here .

BMW already produces an uber-efficient drivetrain
The i3 is , by our calculation , the most environmentally effective car on the road today ( for consultation , Tesla is n’t even in the top 10 ) . That ’s a hell of a feat , but more relevantly , that means the hardest work is already done : engineering the drivetrain . Fitting a modernised Isetta body around that drivetrain should n’t be very difficult , by compare . And look , I ’m not saying the i3 is ugly – far from it – but it convey an image of effective tedium , rather than kinky environmentalism like a modernized Isetta would .
It’s kind of perfect for the autonomous car revolution
Making asports coupe that can drift itself in circles , or aluxury sedan chair that can park itselforhandle give up - and - go dealings ? Those are cool , but in the end we all have it off they ’re merely appetizers . The coming independent rotation think traditional railway car shapes will be reimagined –the Google car proves that much– and what better way to leap into the future than a successful intention from the past that perfectly embodies the bionomical ethos .
It’s also perfect for ride-sharing programs
With theSeattle launching and planned elaboration of the ReachNow car - communion service , BMW ’s corporate design is clearly aimed at providing an affordable means of transport to the metropolis - dwelling muckle . The political program ’s history also has a few issues with parking , notably in San Francisco – something a miniature auto like the Isetta could alleviate .
Moreover , the concept of a tiny electric elevator car that only fits one or two people – potentially laden with autonomous tech – is virtually seamster - made for the future of the cab manufacture .
If BMW doesn’t build a new Isetta, someone else will
The thought just makes too much sentience tonotcome to realisation . So much so , that a tiny fellowship free-base in Switzerland has already begun trying to doexactlythis . Check out the picture above . The re - project Isetta you see here is called theMicrolino . The clock is ticking , BMW , and you have a option : convey back the Isetta as an electric car and sound off some Tesla ass in style , or watch the Swiss do it .
