At midnight the day before the pall rises on Theater Bizarre , Detroit ’s premiere Halloween - themed immersive theater experience , a crowd gathers outside the rear door at the Masonic Temple . green goddess drifts towards the construction ’s pitch roof , and John Dunivant , a svelte world with an intriguing collection of facial piercings and tattoo , talk about the bad old days when performers had a long direction to go to and from the dressing elbow room .
“ They used to be all the agency up , ” he allege , motion with his butt to a green - lit elbow room at least four write up up . He shake his head , and talk drifts back to performers and plans and a ostensibly interminable inclination of tasks to fill out with just 18 minute remaining till the gala affair on October 14th . Volunteer come and go at all hours , and Jason McCombs encourage me to come “ whenever . ”
Dunivant , a Detroit painter , put on a following in the 1990s for the elaborate Halloween parties he like to thrust . One of the events nearly got him evicted , owing somewhat to the fact that he had 500 trees and a life - size cabin in the woods in his apartment . After nearly 10 years of guerrilla dramatic art , including a 2010 effort resulting in the construction by Dunivant and friends of an actual go melodic theme commons , utter with a rolling wave - coaster ( and without trifles like permission or owning the ground it was on ) , the product moved indoors , and today the spectacle makes its lasting annual home base in Detroit ’s Masonic Temple .

Theatre Bizarre , described by organiser as “ The Greatest Masquerade on Earth , ” begins its setup in other September . The building is wad at all hours of the 24-hour interval and night , setting tableaux and dioramas ( not just of perdition – there ’s a truly startling one of a mermaid roughly 7 ft long made of monkey and fish parts ) . Taxidermy plays a low but critical bowl . We saw a raging pig , a fox , and the output ’s infamous ( and fully anatomically entire ) white billy goat , among many other formerly living things at the Masonic .
“ People will be there , ” he recite me when we spoke by phone , " all mean solar day and all night ' til we open . " Tennessean arrange the show . While there ’s a little compensation – they get reimbursement for buy material and sometimes a petty fleck of money after the production close up its two - weekend political campaign – the hundreds of hr that go into making Theatre Bizarre the lavish , sinister spectacle Detroiters have follow to bank on for Halloween surfeit remain for the most part a labor of love .
Dante Wildern and Eric Olechowski , longtime Tennessean , work on a large tableau complete with Inner Light and animatronics . This shot shows the funfair in full swing , meant to capture the event ’s history . Dante seems like the perfect name for a adult male in charge of a fictive hell create in Detroit for the entertainment of multitude willing and able to trounce out $ 100 for a tag ( the opening gala cost $ 260 , but this let in valet service , dinner , and an open bar ) . While the name call back the inferno , the man himself is welcome and understandably proud of the part he plays in putting Theatre Bizarre together .

“ I ’ve been working with these people since I was eight , ” the 20 - something Wildern enunciate . “ This bit alone took closely four years of work . ” He gesture at the cyclorama . Olechowski nods . He ’s been volunteer for years , too , and say he can not even begin to account for the hr spent paint tiny figures – many in the diorama are modeled on volunteers and performer – or set up lights , or constructing stage . I ask him to forecast the time , and he just smile and says , “ Too recollective . ” Wildern holds out a figure from the cyclorama . It ’s clear Olechowski , down to the recollective ponytail . The figures , each about 4 in tall , are more or less dollhouse scale .
“ Volunteers do everything , ” Wildern says . “ On blowout nighttime , there are really more performers here than audience member . ” This is the “ immersive ” part of immersive theater . While you see bands and stage act at Theatre Bizarre , includingRuPaul ’s Drag Racewinner Violet Chachki , who join the lineup for closing weekend , strolling performer make up a huge part of the event . The costumes vagabond from elaborate to unbelievable to indescribable , though the night before opening , the dramaturgy feels solemnly hollow , like a cathedral on December 23rd .
As other Volunteer climb ladders to festoon the cloak room in red velvet , one tells me that the flowers for the gala start arriving that day … and get , and arriving . I see rosebush and sunflowers . Curly willow tree and scarlet mums . Everywhere , on table and the floor , an sea of ruby velvet .

“ There were so many last year , we give a few away , ” one of the volunteers enjoin me as she adjusts the drape of velvet over a tall room access . Another woman hold the ravel . I postulate her when they ’ll finish the prep for tomorrow , and she grins and then hedges . “ Just in time , ” she says , take up a longsighted crapulence of Red Bull . Red Bull and Monster can buoy are everywhere ; dozen of people will work late into the Nox . The Masonic ’s long , dark hall , ignite softly by rake - red-faced bulb in ceiling fixtures that date to the 1920s , lead from one beautifully staged scenery to another . The elevators have incongruously hideous ' 70s fake - Sir Henry Wood panelling and dally muzak . We hear “ Girl from Ipanema ” on our ride to the upper level of the building , where we take in the wholesale view of the Crystal Ballroom from one of the many table set up in the balcony above . A band takes the stage , the lead singer ’s face totally hide by the jack - o - lantern on his head . He make for alt - body politic guitar – an original tune that ’s incongruously jaunty , given the context .
Old funfair posters enshroud the dance palace ’s wall , making title of thrills and chills and marvel of nature . One says “ The Masks Hide their Pain . ” This seems liable , although the level of care and real affection the volunteers have for the output precede me to think that the masks hide a fair amount of joy , too . My companion touches the wallpaper in our trivial aery high above the microscope stage . I try out the wallpaper . The flocking is real velvet and piano against my fingertips . We crawfish out to the antechamber and admire one of the many delicately preserve fauna mounts that play a part in the show .
The clean goat appeared prominently in last year ’s publicity photos , and remains an impressive specimen , quite literally . Dozens of jack - o - lanterns , too many to count , surround the goat . Their black eyes sparkle , absent candles , and the expressions tramp from surprised O ’s to menacing grimaces . Volunteers came on Wednesday to cut up pumpkins , and we see them everywhere , especially in the Crystal Ballroom . I notice that the white goat went to the animal stuffer with an impressive set of testes , and these , too , have been lovingly preserved for the ages . He put up proudly atop a mount of confect corn , and his muzzle feel as soft as the velvet when I stroke his face . I ca n’t help myself .

Everything here has a tactual timbre . The velvet robe , the wallpaper . We find another elbow room , this one full of improbable table draped in Shirley Temple Black . Each one agree a magniloquent meth jar of wrapped seawater taffy . I may or may not have stolen three taffies . If I did , and I ’m not intromit anything , they tasted like caramel corn .
The jamboree host 450 reveler a twelvemonth , and the organizers strictly enforce the costume necessity . All guests must dress up , and the rules for costume require a little more effort than you might put into pay heed your neighbor ’s backyard political party . While Theatre Bizarre exists for an all - too - abbreviated two hebdomad in fall around Halloween , the event has steadily become one of Detroit ’s best new traditions . And none of it exist without the very genuine people who haunt the Masonic for six week beforehand , or who dedicate month and years to making an event with a very well - merit reputation for opulent spectacle .
