The story of Jasper Newton “ Jack ” Daniel is a recollective one , filled with high school and lows . Daniel was one of 13 kid fathered by Calaway Daniel , and his female parent died when he was about seven year old . In 1910 , Tennessee passed a statewide prohibition natural law , barring distillate within the country , so the company relocate surgical operation to St. Louis and Birmingham , Alabama . But with the move came a low - timber whisky , and no product from either facility ever sell . The Tennessee distillery did n’t restore operation until 1938 , when Daniel ’s nephew Lemuel “ Lem ” Motlow , owner of the distillery and now a state senator , would vacate the local law . Jack Daniel ’s persist the oldest registered still in the United States and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 .
