When John Walker ’s founding father lead in 1819 , he sell the family farm and used the money to open a local grocery storage . There , John trade a selection of spirits including rum , brandy , gin and Scotch whisky , include , eventually , his own brand , which he called Walker ’s Kilmarnock . After a terrible flood in 1852 that ruined the grocery ’s pedigree , John ’s Logos , Alexander , convinced him to vacate the grocery business and go into distill full - time . Upon John ’s death in 1857 , Alexander take the business organization over and , in 1867 , he seize upon a golden byplay chance : the arrival of the railway , which comport good to ships .
