You ’d be forgiven if Irish culture is n’t thefirstthing that comes to your idea when you think about San Diego . Given our southern neighbors , America ’s Finest City is likely more associated with tacos al pastor than cured beef & cabbage . And that ’s intelligible . But March 17 is St. Patrick ’s Day , a day when everyone get to guess they ’re Irish . As such , you should observe in appropriate mode : with a moth-eaten dry pint of beer and good company .
To help you do just that , we ’ve picked out the five beneficial Irish streak around Ithiel Town to celebrate good ol' Saint Patrick . And in fiat to determine these formation , we asked an Irishman who would roll in the hay : Daniel Drayne , owner of The Field , an Irish gin mill in the Gaslamp Quarter ( and one we picked for this troll - up ) , in an effort to recognise what makes a good Irish stripe in San Diego .
Daniel Drayne, owner of The Field
On his bar:“At The Field , we were one of the first Irish pubs on the West Coast to stress genuineness in our plan . To work up our bar , we had everything shipped here from Ireland piece by art object . And that ’s why we do n’t feel like some random Irish - American bar where it ’s plainly an Irish pothouse in name only , with shamrocks on the wall and a Guinness water tap . "
On Irish pubs:“When we talk about what makes an Irish pub great , there ’s a watchword we utilise quite a bit in Ireland : craic . Craic[pronounced essentially like ' crack ' ] , in Ireland , is like saying , ' What ’s go on ? ' You know , what ’s thecraic ? What ’s playfulness , what ’s in the aura , what ’s happening at that clip – craic embrace all of that . So when you seem for an authentic Irish bar , you look for that craic , so to speak . "
On St. Patrick ’s Day:“The first affair to remember when celebrating St. Patrick ’s Day is that it ’s send for St. Patrick ’s Day , and nothing else . Not St. Paddy ’s . It ’s celebrated a bit differently back in Ireland . In America , it ’s consociate with going to the pub and accept the beverage . In Ireland , it ’s a religious holiday , our big national vacation . All school and banks are off , and it ’s a way for class to get together . "

The Ould Sod
Take it from Drayne : " The Ould Sod is one of the only Irish bars out here that open before us . It ’s going on 26 years now , and it ’s just as practiced as ever . It was one of the first Irish bar I exit to when I moved out here , and it ’s still Irish - possess and -run . It ’s one of the few true Irish bar I ’d go into . “If all that straight from an Irishman ’s mouth has n’t sold you , The Ould Sod feature traditional Irish euphony on Tuesdays and karaoke on Thursdays and Saturdays . Plus , with its outdoor beer garden opening on Saint Patrick ’s Day this class , you’re able to sit outside and love a beer while feeling like you ’re in Ireland , minus all of the rain and gray sky . "
Hooleys Irish Pub
" The proprietor of Hooleys , he ’s been on the go a fairly long clip and know how to run a honest Irish stripe , " says Drayne . " Like ours , most of his ginmill is imported from Ireland , so you have the authentic look of being back home . " Also , it serves corned beef tacos , and they ’re pretty all-fired good . If a position can somehow make the hellish marriage of Mexican food for thought and Irish culinary art delicious , that ’s a barroom you should claver often .
Stout Public House
" This bar has n’t been go for as long as some of the others in the domain , " says Drayne . " I think they ’ve only been on the go for a good 10 year or so now , but it ’s a substantial Irish pub . It ’s a skilful mutant bar , they ’ll have whatever game you ’re hoping to watch on idiot box , and most importantly , they have great craic behind the bar . “As Drayne notes , Stout is a bit Modern than some of the other pub . Its menu mull over that newness with an eclectic mix of food , everything from pesto chicken ( decidedly not Irish ) to BBQ carnitas sandwich ( again , if you could n’t state , " carnitas " is not an Irish word ) .
O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub
Drayne did n’t have much to say about the two O’Sullivan ’s locations other than that he stops by them when he ’s in North County and that they do a not bad job of replicate an veritable saloon . dig into the screen background of O’Sullivan ’s , it seems no gem has been entrust unturned in its quest for authenticity . nether region , the bill of fare even boast boxty ( an Irish white potato vine pancake ) , which , if you have n’t adjudicate , you should . Plus , with springy music nearly every night of the week , you ’d be hard - press to obtain a twenty-four hour period when there is n’t just craic at the O’Sullivan ’s locations .
The Field
As noted above , Drayne ’s bar is about as existent as it gets . It ’s been around for 18 age , most of the waitstaff is from the Emerald Isle , and the kitchen makes a cause of death shepherd ’s Proto-Indo European . Plus , it shows literal Irish sports , like Gaelic football game and hurling . certainly , you in all probability wo n’t know what the hell is happening while you ’re watching , but there will be people cheering and cold-blooded beer . Does anything else in life matter ?
