New Orleans isthe best kind of food urban center . What with all of their unique offering ( po - boys , oyster well-chosen hours , frozen daiquiri , etc . ) , it persist one of my favourite cities to share a repast in . But eat a burger ? I was n’t so certain . New Orleans may be known for many exemplary culinary items , but Warren Burger are not one of them .

Or so I thought , before I got to township . aid me along on this leg of the journeying was our Senior Cities Director ( and33 in force burgers in Americaco - author ) Liz Childers , who lives in the metropolis with her New Orleans native married man . Over the course of two days , we impose onetime - school day New Orleans legends , Vietnamese restaurants , and some newfangled local chains . And when I came out of it , I had a whole Modern respectfulness for the hamburger chops in this city .

Oh , and in case you ’re fresh to my ranking , here are some guidelines : if the eating place had multiple hamburger , I tried to order the closest to a classic cheeseburger , and if it came with options , I always picked American cheese and grilled Allium cepa .

10. Single with American and grilled onions

truburger

I ’m going to start out with a positive affair here , because I am by and large a gracious somebody . There was good grill on the bun . But that ’s about where the positivity ends . alas , my experience at truburger resembled one of those Yelp fulmination nightmares that sound made up . My Warren E. Burger take 35 minutes to come out . At a sit - down restaurant , that is a farseeing time . But this is a debauched - casual reefer . That is forever . And because I was sit down outside , I walk back in to find out and see if my solid food was up , and did so between five and seven meter , until the woman at the front begin checking on my food as well . I am not certain what happened , but finally my single with American and grilled onions came out . It was missing the tru sauce , but I was not about to send anything back . It was medium - sized , and the cake was peppery , but it was overcooked . That good grill on the bun was also a bit of a waste material because the roll had gotten moth-eaten from sit for awhile . And the grilled onion had been ready so long that the natural sugars burnt . Hopefully this was just a fluke of sorts , because I certainly do n’t bask this case of review . I HAVE A HEART , OK ?

9. Cheeseburger

Port of Call

Port of Call is celebrated for essentially make the New Orleans - style burger in the ' LX ( for more , read a gripping piecebyNew Orleans Times - Picayunerestaurant critic Brett Anderson on the theme ) , and is one of the two burgers in New Orleans I ’d actually eaten before I came for this task . Also , it has unhinged - strong cocktail in to - go cups . I learned the hard way to never make a public speech after having one . It is , to my gustation , an extremely serviceable , heavy , backyard - grill burger with a few issue that keep it at No . 9 . The center is juicy , and the rip up , cold cheddar cheese eventually mellow a bit , giving a slight piquantness to the natural Allium cepa and hamburger dill pickles . But the bun is perfunctorily toasted , and dry pieces flake off the top . That white potato vine on the side was pretty bloody pleasant-tasting , though .

8. Lot-O Burger dressed with American and grilled onions

Ted’s Frostop

As we stand order , a pocket-size young lady standing on a milk crate represent a Pac - Man arcade game and danced a little bit to the Jackson 5 bumping in the background . She was mad , and she had a right field to be – about five moment later , her and her baby were sit down down , and absolutely crushing a Lot - type O Burger . The Lot - O Burger is a great , Graeco-Roman , diner - style burger , where the American Malva sylvestris blend with crispy griddled patty and flimsy , cooked red onions , which are so slender as to almost be shaved – and , at least for me , were slightly undercooked . But the standard sesame bun had the perfect butter griddle to hold up to the mess of look coming from the mayo , mustard , and everything else . It was on equation with the next burger you ’ll find in the rankings , though the Camellia acquire the tiebreaker with honest onion plant and a little more nip from the grill .

7. Hamburger with cheese, dressed with grilled onions

The Camellia Grill

“ legendary institution , specially when hungover ” is the direction Liz might ’ve described this shoes . And indeed , it is a legend , with its stem standoff - clad waiters and old - school feel . And it serve up a damn fine beefburger in a mode I certainly dig – griddled , with just the right-hand amount of woman , on a flat - top that ’s been seasoned with bacon fat – which have it an spare salty , fatty flavor that pairs well with the classic chopped , buttery grilled onion plant and American cheese . The bun is characterless , but in a good elbow room . I ’ve honestly got nothing bad to say . There were just a heap of very beneficial New Orleans burgers .

6. Toups' Burger

Toups' Meatery

Just a lunchtime strength , Toups ’ Burger is for the meat - serious . It ’s a assortment of pork and beef , and I suspect they might ’ve mold the beef patty around the pork to give it a gambol on texture and relish throughout . Pickles are very thin summer squash , delicate and slightly spicy . They could ’ve been a bit hotter to balance all the other things going on here , include deep - cut 1st Baron Verulam and a good herbed aioli sauce , which gave it a decent savour , but also some extra fatness that did n’t have that acid balance . concluding conclusion : delicious , but also a impact of a gut punch .

5. The #4 (meat, cheddar, hickory smoked sauce, onion)

Bud’s Broiler

If you ’ve ever desire to play thevideo game versionof the tailgate game Bags , Bud ’s has you covered . Liz and I played an exciting unit of ammunition of this game as we waited at Bud ’s , which has an inside that seems like it was designed by someone lovingly picking random token out of a chapeau . Another entry in the legend class , this broiled hamburger joint has been around since 1952 ( and has only had two owner , the current one having ferment at the restaurant since 1962 before purchasing it in the ' 90s).Though Bud ’s abides by some of the New Orleans - style traditions ( moth-eaten sliced cheese , for example ) , it has its own distinct style thanks to the “ hickory smoke sauce . ” And though it ordinarily survive against my rules to have a Warren Earl Burger with a non - conventional sauce , Liz argued that this was what pee Bud ’s stand out . And dammit , she was right . The subtle smokiness of the sauce blends well with the thin , piquant patty , precipitous cheddar , and bare-ass onions , which work even better than grill because of their exercising weight counteracting the sauce . The bun was dead griddled – it stood up to all the sauce , and did n’t blink . A great , unequaled beefburger . Oh , and I lose pretty bad at that stupid Bags biz .

4. The Atomic Burger

Atomic Burger

On a all ho-hum strip satiate with big box stock just outside the metropolis sits Atomic Burger . It should n’t be as salutary as it is . It credibly does n’t postulate to be . And yet it is . Start with a great squishy bun with a escape - test copy griddle . Add in thin , salty , chintzy patties , and in the buff onion plant that are almost razor - thin , plus pickles for Zen , and you get a fast Warren E. Burger that would give any top - stage In - N - Out a run for its money . Do n’t tell anyone in California I read that .

3. The LPG Cheeseburger

La Petite Grocery

I did n’t really require to get a Warren E. Burger , verity be told . Justin Devillier ’s laud southerly spot was one of the last stop on my New Orleans burger tour , and the fare just looked too practiced to settle for a beefburger . But I am a professional , so I ordered the damn Warren Burger ( and mayhap some puritanical crabmeat beignets on the side). But thank god I did . The compact cake , usually a twist - off , was utterly misrepresent , racy , and pink , and the Gruyere mixed with the meat , aioli , and onion marmalade to create a zesty , piquant mint . But just when you thought that would be too much , the mansion pickles , food grain mustard , and peppery garden rocket make out through to achieve great symmetry . Oh , and the voiced bun , which had only a cursory bit of char on top , but more on the bottom , played its part well . I ’m unquestionably total back and ordering more food , but I ’ll probably still get the Warren Burger .

2. The Kim Chi Burger

Mint Modern Bistro & Bar

“ What are we doing at a Vietnamese place ? ” I hiss at Liz as we walk in . “ You ’ll see , ” she articulate . And see I did . Nothing about this Warren Burger from an upscale , daily Vietnamese spot should make me excited . I do n’t like loggerheaded patty ; it ’s a couple of inches of beef . I do n’t like brioche ; they put it on brioche . I do n’t like tricks ; the burger comes topped with kim chi . But this sort of experience is precisely why I ’m actually tasting all of these hamburger . The burger is fundamentally pass with a mix of spicy mayo and kim chi . The acid from the kim chi balances both the soupiness of the mayo , and the fat burger , which is crazily flavorful for its sizing . The bun does n’t interfere , though my only complaint would be that it was slightly over - buttered and a pool of grime formed at the bottom . But really , this is a minor complaint . This burger is a revelation , and should be seek after immediately .

1. The Single

The Company Burger

I definitely did n’t want The Company Burger to be identification number one . In truth , I love Company Burger and everything they do , and have eaten it several time before , but I want to follow in with a hot take that ramify my ranking from Brett Anderson ’s , and at least seemed somewhat original . After all , I ’m an out - of - towner , a burger carpetbagger , just twirl in , eating a band , and dispensing strong opinion . But when I stared into my beefburger - loving individual , I had no choice . Company Burger simply makes one of the best burgers in the state . The single is round-eyed – just theatre - made bread & butter pickles , American , and grill carmine onions – but each aspect is gross . The jam have a good amount of Lucy in the sky with diamonds and a spicy bite , the cooked red onions tender up more of a kick than blank , and they allow you to dress your hamburger at a sauce bar , so you’re able to figure out the right amount of sauce for your tastes . I went with the Thousand Island clone . Naturally , it too was perfect . Damn you , Company Burger . Damn you and all your pure burger glory .
