We ’re breaking down Season 3 ofBlack Mirror , which is now swarm on Netflix . you’re able to read our interview withseries creator Charlie Brookerand strain through our recaps and analyses of other novel episodes " Nosedive , " " valet de chambre Against Fire , " and " Hated in the Nation . " Here , we take a look at Episode 3 , " shut out Up and Dance . "

" Shut Up and saltation , " about a 19 - year - old(Alex Lawther , ofThe Imitation Gamefame ) who fall prey to laptop - hack trolls , is a hard installment to watch . Directed by James Watkins and write by William Bridges and seriescreator Charlie Brooker , the dark thriller is at once a very untypical and very classicBlack Mirrorstory . It might be the hard to tummy this time of year . Here ’s why .

It takes place tomorrow

Like the bestBlack mirror , " Dance " is a nightmare that hones in on a twain matter ( in this display case , hacking and trolling ) , takes them to a hypothetical extreme point , and prepare you worry whether human nature can coexist with advanced tech . But unlike such entries as " Fifteen Million Merits " and " Nosedive , " this one learn stead in neither an otherworldly dystopia nor a far - flung future tense .

When feckless fast - food employee Kenny   comes home from his restaurant job , he finds his younger sister trying to watch movies on his laptop . It ’s icy . He downloads a free malware remover called Shrive , which seemingly fixes the job . What it really does : gives a hacker , or drudge collective , be intimate as Mindy access to his personal information , laptop webcam , and microphone . ( This scenario probably sounds familiar . ) So the next prison term he goes to masturbate ? He ’s caught with his drawers down .

The sequence that follow – strings of " do this or we ’ll expose your dirty deed " errands that include delivering a patty and robbing a bank building with co - adept Jerome Flynn ( oh , hey , Bronn fromGame of Thrones ) – create a jump on sense of anxiety , part because Kenny ’s hopelessness as a marionette to anonymous sociopath is palpable , but also because this scenario could actually happen . Kenny communicate with his extortionist via text subject matter . He taunt a bike and drives a Volvo . His laptop computer even looksoutdated . viewer witness a tragedy that could come about tomorrow . Yesterday , even .

The point is " Dance " has the lasting effect of something like " The integral History of You , " where the trauma you see onscreen does n’t stop obsess you offscreen .

It ends on a super-depressing note

Seriously . I half hate it , half bed it .

The entire episode feels like it wants to say something about the net ’s major power to dehumanize people , how the individual you are behind your black mirror can become a vastly different soul , or altogether creature , than the somebody you are in literal life . Timemagazine ’s Joel Stein recently wrote a cover version narration about trolling , and his article refer on this transformative phenomenon .

" If you need assistant ameliorate your upload speed , the entanglement is eager to help with expert details,“wrote Steinback in August . " But if you tell it you ’re struggling with impression it will hear to goad you into killing yourself . Psychologists call this the online disinhibition effect , in which factors like namelessness , invisibleness , a want of authority and not communicate in real metre strip away the mores society spent millennia building .   At some power point , everyone , no matter how desensitized by their online experience , is nonimmune to get freaked out by a big enough or roughshod enough scourge . The problem is , Kenny never see this threat ; there ’s no confrontation in the traditional common sense . Before " Dance " ends , he ’s ordered to struggle another man to the demise . A bourdon hovers by , out of reach , to watch . But we do n’t see anything . alternatively , a topnotch - depressing collage rolls , one that shows the cyber-terrorist exposing the sins of every case we ’ve see , just for the heck of it . All of Mindy ’s victims , including Kenny , receivethe Trollface . All their tasks – everything we sat through in the last 52 minutes – were fill in for nought . It ’s a moody slug line .

But that ’s kind of the point . Though we never encounter Mindy , we encounter several other threats : all those people who hide behind their phones and computers to satisfy their ill desire . Kenny ’s targeted because he ’s " looking at Kyd , " as his mother puts it . Flynn ’s character gets catch endeavor to cuckold on his wife with a prostitute . The troll in this episode is n’t just a trolling , but a radical vigilante – an internet version of Jigsaw – who serves the same brutal judge we see in " White Bear , " and who makes us involve the same question : which characters are truly depraved ?

All of them are , to a degree , because in " Shut Up and Dance , " the internet ’s anonymity does n’t multiply heroes .
