Americans bed to humblebrag about how much we work . We send pictorial matter from the federal agency at 10 pm . We boast about never taking demented day , even when we ’re bunk 102 - degree temperatures . Employers offer us quote - unquoteunlimited vacationknowing we ’ll just come to work anyway .
The US Travel Association ’s task : Time Off take a study this year that receive Americans exit 658 million unused vacation days on the table last year . That ’s not just speculative for would - be vacationer , it ’s bad for would - beworkers . The bemused spending from those vacation days amount $ 223 billion , which would have created 1.6 million more jobs , and $ 65 billion in total American income .
straight patriots leave the office . Still , we all have self-justification for why we ’re not take up more vacation . Katie Denis , the Senior Director of Project : Time Off , explains here why the top excuses for not taking vacation are misguided . bask , then go play .

“I’m going to come back to a mountain of work”
Anyone who ’s ever made the misunderstanding of looking at their inbox on holiday knows that dread of pass to the insurmountable . And checking that e-mail might be a swelled part of the problem .
“ The work is n’t a ‘ billet ’ anymore – it ’s a state of being , ” Denis says . “ So when you see workplace piling up in existent time , it create some challenges . You have to prioritize your vacation or it ’s not going to happen . ”
The key here is to plan ahead , as sore as that is . verify everyone on your team – from your manager on down – cognize about your holiday far in the lead of time , and verify you do enough homework crop in onward motion of leaving . As Denis explicate : “ People are n’t just more fertile after they taketime off , but often times they ’re more productive in the weeksbefore . The thought of vacation makes them well-chosen and they work harder with something to look forward to . ”

“Nobody else can do my job”
Many of us have an ego so big , we ’re convinced our party will give during our two weeks on a beach somewhere . But your company ( likely ) is n’t in the habit of take morons . You ’ll be surprised what the rest of your coworkers can do when asked . ( Hell , you ’ve probably pull that weight for someone else already . ) And your taking some time away can be a good thing for everyone .
“ vacation should be looked at as an chance to see who can can step up and handle other responsibilities , ” Denis says . “ I took four months off for maternity parting and at first , it was nerve racking . But what I found was my team stepped up in ways I never have it away they could . It really grew all of us . We found some competencies we did n’t know were there . ”
“It’ll cost too much”
Besides meteoroid showers and dance company , everything worthwhile in aliveness costssomething . Workers named money concern as a vast obstacle : it was the third - most common reason for skipping time off , with 30 % of the great unwashed saying vacation were too pricy . But holiday does n’t have to be a fully grown fancy trip to some overpriced city . There are literallyhundreds of way you could save money when you travel . And America ’s full of dynamite city fora trashy weekend lam . Heck , time off does n’t even have to intend leaving your house . It can just mean spending barren clip with your menage , that ’s not spent fighting for parking spots at Costco on a Saturday .
“ There ’s so much you’re able to do , mighty in your backyard , like parts of your metropolis you never explore or the open air , ” Denis says . “ But what was say for me was a study we did on 8 - to-14 - year - olds . When we asked them about their favorite vacations they were n’t big , elaborated trips . It was small clobber . One girl said her favorite memory was a day her dad aim off and they went to Target and bought a Slip - n - Slide and place it up in the front yard . It ’s the quality of the time you spend with your kids that ’s important , not the amount of money you pass . ”

“I want to show dedication to my job”
Millennials get a rap for being faineant and entitled – a pretty lazy , and honestly entitle critique . The under-35s are the multiplication that leavesthe mostvacation days on the table . Denis order this is because they graduated into a skimpy economy with no jobs , and once they get a business they harbour on for dear life , venerate taking time off will somehow make them look lazy .
Yet the opposite is just as lawful . Project Time Off did enquiry with managers and HR departments and find that employees who take time off are largely better performer , more rich , and more likely to get incentive . And though there was no direct correlation either way between vacation clip and promotions , as Denis put it , “ If skipping vacation is n’t doing anything for your career , then why are you doing it ? ”
“My company will realize it doesn’t need me”
Again , Wally Pipp , your taking meter off does n’t make you expendable . It ’s an opportunity to see what others on your squad can do . So when you return , you may find that you get to explore fresh and exciting facet of your job , since your manager learned that others can take up some of your responsibility .
Going back to Denis ’ motherhood leave case , she suppose , “ I have a whole new bandwidth now , and I ’m able to act on young projects I could n’t before . ” And if you are spendable ? Well , possibly it ’s metre to face for more suitable work anyway .
“There’s not time”
Even the busiest of companies plan to carve out meter for employees ’ holiday . And while director might not make a point to encourage masses to take holiday , Denis discover they do n’t discourage it either . The key to everything is planning .
“ People who say they plan their vacation times shit felicitous in nine out of nine categories we surveil , from fiscal situation to personal success to satisfaction with the company they work for , " she say . " It ’s manifestly impossible to know what ’s fit to go on , but even if you have to take ( your holiday ) off the calendar , having an theme is enormously helpful to your happiness , and to being a good co - prole . ”
