originally today , Prince diedat the years of 57 in Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen , Minnesota . His talent was unlimited : he was a singer , guitar player , disk producer , actor , motion picture director , intimate chameleon , ping - niff partizan , and fashion icon . And , as you know if you ’ve read Questlove ’s excellent 2013 memoirMo ' Meta Blues , he was a glorious hair curler skater .
Prince ’s love of crimper skating is n’t exactly a well - document part of his persona . For one matter , it ’s incredibly difficult to find a photo of Prince rolling wave - skating . spare for the song " Strollin ' , " off his 1991 albumDiamonds and Pearls , on which he sings , " We could engage some roller skate / We could skate around the lake , " his discography is n’t on the dot pack with roller - rink references . The only grounds we really have is Quest ’s incredible story ( read it here ) .
Questlove latertold NPR , " It was the most surreal night of my liveliness . " It starts with the Roots drummer get a text content from Prince ’s assistant ask in him and some " cool people " to a roller - skating party on Valentine ’s Day , which is exactly the type of demand you would hope an icon like Prince would make . Questlove recruits Eddie Murphy to join him , but when they arrive at the roller skating rink , it ’s mostly empty . They end up skating for an hour with no signal of Prince . Finally , the Purple One come with a mysterious briefcase , and Questlove is forced to check his telephone set .
Warner Bros.
Here ’s the good part : " When I got back , Prince had the briefcase out on the story , " write Questlove . " He click the ignition lock and opened it , and claim out the strange , most singular yoke of roller skate I had ever seen . They were clear skate that fall up , and the wheels sent a multicolored spark track into your path . He took them out and did a boastful lap around the rink . Man . He could skate like he could let the cat out of the bag . "
I always remember about that line : " He could skate like he could sing . " That ’s what was so exceptional about Prince . It did n’t matter if he was performing at a tiny club orplaying " Purple pelting " at the Super Bowl , he did everything his mode . And he just preserve doing it , issue albums of uncompromising , often boundary - labour music the right way up until the remnant of his life . Tonight , whether you ’re pulling out your favored Prince LPs , your candela copy of theBatmansoundtrack , or just talking about him with friend , close your eyes and picture Prince glide around a tumbler pigeon skating rink with sparks flying around him – skating just like he sang .
