Even before the program of the 2016 Tony Awards start , the announcement had come that the show would be " commit to those affected by the events in Orlando , " where at least 50 are utter and another 50 injured after a serviceman open up fire inside the Pulse LGBT nightclub .
The award show release a statement early in the day , aver , " Our hearts are lumbering for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando . Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected . The Tony Awards dedicate tonight ’s ceremony to them . "
James Corden , hosting the Awards for the first time , opened with a statement of solidarity . " You are not on your own right now , " he said . " hatred will never win . "

Later in the program , Hamiltoncreator Lin - Manuel Miranda , while take the award for Best Original Score ( Music and/or Lyrics ) Written for the Theatre used his time to deliver a message of solidarity as well . " I ’m not freestyling , I ’m too erstwhile , ” he told the audience . “ I compose you a sonnet instead . "
The poem , adequate part for his wife and the victims of Sunday morning ’s shot , built up and had him in binge as the last stanza of the sonnet repeated , " Love is love is love is love is love . "
